The roll-top backpack »Ryan« is a puristic leather daypack with a 15-inch laptop compartment. This trendy roll-top look is inspired by the backpacks worn by bicycle couriers that have been around since the 1990s in the world's major cities. The highlight is that these backpacks are very variable in size and can be rolled up or down depending on the contents. »Ryan« is a charming mix of modernity and tradition. Rough soul, soft core.
The leather backpack for men and women is closed with a zipper at the top and can be rolled up at the top, depending on the filling volume. The rolled edge is fixed at the top with a leather strap. The leather bicycle backpack has two zippered compartments on the outside. One at the front and one on the side. Inside, the leather backpack has a padded 15" laptop compartment and another zippered compartment for valuables. The shoulder straps are adjustable in length.
The backpack »Ryan« is made almost entirely by hand. The production of a single bag takes countless hours. Only natural and sustainable materials are used. All wear points are covered with leather on the outside. All stress points are additionally reinforced. The back of the leather backpack is padded and elegantly quilted in "diamond stitch". Our DRAKENSBERG signature element.
Perhaps you have already noticed that our bags are different.
The bag made of canvas and leather is almost completely handmade in many individual steps. Our master bag makers and saddlers need years of training to be able to produce bags of this quality.
We value natural and high-quality materials and pay attention to sustainability and the environment. GENUINE BUFFALO LEATHER, 100% COTTON, a high material strength and the complete absence of synthetic fibers in our outer fabrics characterize our bags. Handmade premium quality you can feel!
Leather is a natural material and may have small imperfections. Each leather product is also patinated by hand. This complex process makes our products unmistakable. No bag can be exactly like another. Small color deviations are unfortunately unavoidable and not a sign of poor quality.

FAQs: Frequently asked questions about our Backpack »Ryan« w Havana-Brown
WHAT IS A ROLL TOP BACKPACK?
Roll-top backpacks are inspired by the backpacks used by bicycle couriers, which have been around since the 1990s in major cities around the world. The highlight is that these roll backpacks are very variable in size and can be rolled up or down depending on the content. A backpack that grows with its tasks. A classic of modern times.
CAN I TAKE THE BACKPACK "RYAN", HAVANA-BROWN ON THE PLANE?
This leather backpack meets the dimensions of the major airlines and IATA. The backpack is the ideal hand luggage for almost any means of transport.
IS THE »RYAN« BACKPACK, HAVANA-BROWN MADE OF LEATHER, DIMENSIONALLY STABLE OR RATHER SOFT?
Our leather backpack belongs to the so-called soft luggage. However, we use full-grain buffalo leather for this backpack. This material is inherently relatively dimensionally stable. However, the shape changes somewhat depending on the filling quantity. The advantage is that the leather backpack can be stowed away flat if it is not needed. With our leather bags, we deliberately do without a plastic lamination, which is required for a firm shape.
IS THE ROLL TOP BACKPACK »RYAN«, HAVANA BROWN, WATERPROOF OR WATER-REPELLENT?
The leather backpack was designed based on the classic mountain backpacks or hunting backpacks of the 19th century. In order to be as authentic as possible, we have only used materials - as they were 100 years ago - and avoid plastics and chemicals as much as possible. Unfortunately, the standard version of our backpack is not waterproof or water-repellent. However, a short rain shower doesn't bother our bags. Alternatively, the backpack can be impregnated against moisture.
CAN THE »RYAN« BACKPACK, HAVANA-BROWN, BE MADE WATERPROOF AFTERWARDS?
The backpack can be impregnated very well afterwards, with a commercial and colorless impregnation spray (e.g. Impregnol). It is best to test the impregnation on the back before the impregnation is used across the board. Please follow the instructions for use and only use the spray in fresh air. Please also note the minimum distance to the backpack when spraying the impregnation, otherwise stains can occur.
HOW CAN I CLEAN AND CARE FOR MY LEATHER BACKPACK »RYAN«, HAVANA-BROWN?
We are of the opinion that a leather backpack with a vintage design can and should be seen to see how intensively it has been used. That's how it has to be. If you still feel the need to clean your bag, we recommend three steps:
- Remove dust and dirt particles from the backpack, e.g. with a brush or hand-held vacuum cleaner
- Gently dab and rub away stains with a clean, wet cloth. Consider trying a mild detergent if the stains are stubborn.
- Slightly grease leather from time to time (e.g. leather care with beeswax or carnauba wax). It is best to be careful not to hit the canvas to avoid stains.
WHICH LEATHER IS USED FOR THE »RYAN« BACKPACK, HAVANA BROWN?
We only use vegetable-tanned, full-grain buffalo leather for the backpack. The particularly robust leather comes from India. During production, our leather is also finished by hand with a colored carnauba-based wax, giving it its special vintage patina.
WHERE AND HOW IS THE »RYAN« BACKPACK, HAVANA BROWN, MADE?
Our goods are made in India. Our manufactory is a small family business whose long-standing employees manufacture our bags with a lot of heart and passion. In the meantime, a real friendship has grown from our long cooperation. The production conditions are socially acceptable and correspond to BSCI standards. We convince ourselves of this on a regular basis. Our leather and cotton fabrics are sourced directly locally from India. When dyeing our cotton fabrics, only dyes that are free of AZO dyes are used. Our leathers are basically vegetable tanned, i.e. plant-based and without the use of aggressive tanning agents. Our standards are socially and ecologically justifiable and above average.
Our leather production is LWG certified
Our leather tannery is certified to the LWG standard and we use only vegetable tanning agents for tanning. The Leather Working Group (LWG) is an initiative to make conditions in tanneries and intermediaries more transparent and to bring about sustainable change. To implement its goals, the Leather Working Group has developed an audit protocol for sustainable and responsible leather production.
