Consistent is sometimes not consistent enough. With our "Steve" travel bag, we wanted to take the adventure look to the extreme and pay homage to classic expedition luggage. David Livingstone's luggage could have looked something like this on one of his numerous expeditions across South Africa in the 19th century. He discovered the famous Victoria Falls, was the first European to cross the Kalahari Desert and found the origin of the Congo.
The "Steve" travel bag is a weekender-style bag for longer trips of up to 7 days. The bag can be slung casually over the shoulder or carried elegantly by hand on the leather strap. On the outside there are two useful storage compartments in cargo design, which can be opened quickly if necessary. There is also a large zip pocket on the back.
The bag is of high quality. All wear points are lined with leather on the outside. All stress points are additionally reinforced. The bottom of the bag is padded and elegantly quilted in "diamond stitch". Our DRAKENSBERG signature element.
We are Daniel and Christoph and live our dream. We founded the DRAKENSBERG label because we want to inspire people to recognize the true value of travel and to strive for it.
To understand the path as a goal and to grow with it. A good trip means learning. About life and about yourself. We know that a good trip can change a whole life. Our travel bags are intended to remind people of the zeitgeist of the 19th and 20th centuries, when travel was still an adventure and travelers were adventurers.
Perhaps you have already noticed that our bags are different.
The bag made of canvas and leather is almost completely handmade in many individual steps. Our master bag makers and saddlers need years of training to be able to produce bags of this quality.
We value natural and high-quality materials and pay attention to sustainability and the environment. GENUINE BUFFALO LEATHER, 100% COTTON, a high material strength and the complete absence of synthetic fibers in our outer fabrics characterize our bags. Handmade premium quality you can feel!
Leather is a natural material and may have small imperfections. Each leather product is also patinated by hand. This complex process makes our products unmistakable. No bag can be exactly like another. Small color deviations are unfortunately unavoidable and not a sign of poor quality.
FAQs: Frequently asked questions about our Duffle bag »Steve« Olive-Green
CAN THE "STEVE" HOLDALL, OLIVE GREEN, BE CHECKED IN AS CHECKED BAGGAGE ON FLIGHTS?
We can answer this question with a clear "yes". Nevertheless, we would like to give you a few recommendations. You should only check in your travel bag for the flight if it is well filled. So that the bag can be easily transported via the conveyor belts at the airports. Therefore, you should definitely remove the carrying strap and stow it in your pocket. We would also advise against fragile or sensitive items if you want to check in the bag.
WHICH CLOSURE SYSTEM ARE USED TO CLOSE THE TWO PATCH POCKETS ON THE FRONT OF THE »STEVE«S TRAVEL BAG IN OLIVE GREEN?
We have attached so-called snap fasteners under the leather buckles. Initially, the bags could still be closed with a magnetic clasp. However, we received a lot of feedback, especially in the early days, that this closure system is practical, but it can also lead to the bags being able to open unintentionally. That's why we have revised the "Steve" travel bag and optimized it according to your wishes.
IS THE "STEVE" TRAVEL BAG, OLIVE GREEN, WATERPROOF OR WATER-REPELLENT?
The bag was designed based on the classic travel bags of the 19th century. In order to be as authentic as possible, we have only used materials - as they were 100 years ago - and avoid plastics and chemicals as much as possible. Unfortunately, the standard version of our travel bag is not waterproof or water-repellent. However, a short rain shower doesn't bother our bags.
CAN THE "STEVE" TRAVEL BAG, OLIVE GREEN, BE MADE WATERPROOF AFTERWARDS?
The “Steve” travel bag can be impregnated very well afterwards, with a commercially available, colorless impregnation spray (e.g. Impregnol). Alternatively, you can also use an impregnation wax (e.g. Dr. Gee's impregnation wax). You should only note that this can change the color and texture of the bag. It is best to test the impregnation on the underside.
HOW CAN I CLEAN AND CARE FOR MY "STEVE" TRAVEL BAG, OLIVE GREEN?
We are of the opinion that a vintage travel bag can and should be seen to see how intensively it has been used. That's how it has to be. If you still feel the need to clean your bag, we recommend three steps:
- Remove dust and dirt particles from the bag, e.g. with a brush or hand-held vacuum cleaner
- Gently dab and rub away stains with a clean, wet cloth. Consider trying a mild detergent if the stains are stubborn.
- Slightly grease leather from time to time (e.g. leather care with beeswax or carnauba wax). It is best to be careful not to hit the canvas to avoid stains.
WHAT KIND OF LEATHER IS THE »STEVE«, OLIVE GREEN TRAVEL BAG MADE OF?
For our bags we only use vegetable tanned and full-grain buffalo leather. The particularly robust leather comes from India. During production, our leather is also finished by hand with a colored carnauba-based wax, giving it its special vintage patina.
WHERE AND HOW IS THE CANVAS TRAVEL BAG »STEVE«, OLIVE GREEN MADE?
Our goods are made in India. Our manufactory is a small family business whose long-standing employees manufacture our bags with a lot of heart and passion. In the meantime, a real friendship has grown from our long cooperation. The production conditions are socially acceptable and correspond to BSCI standards. We convince ourselves of this on a regular basis. Our leather and cotton fabrics are sourced directly locally from India. When dyeing our cotton fabrics, only dyes that are free of AZO dyes are used. Our leathers are basically vegetable tanned, i.e. plant-based and without the use of aggressive tanning agents. Our standards are socially and ecologically justifiable and above average.
Our leather production is LWG certified
Our leather tannery is certified to the LWG standard and we use only vegetable tanning agents for tanning. The Leather Working Group (LWG) is an initiative to make conditions in tanneries and intermediaries more transparent and to bring about sustainable change. To implement its goals, the Leather Working Group has developed an audit protocol for sustainable and responsible leather production.
